Scotland: some observations
January 25, 2009 at 9:46 pm | In Scotland | 3 CommentsIn honour of Burns’ night, I’ve decided to take the liberty of giving my top ten things I love about the country that’s had the decency to host me for the post 6 and a half years (and some things I find a bit strange..):
Ten things I love (no particular order):
1. Chewin’ the Fat (bring it back, please?)
2. The Edinburgh festival (traffic congestion and woeful booking systems aside)
3. Four years of Uni
4. Haggis (why do some people hate it?)
5. I can share my annoyance about English football & rugby commentators with like-minded people
6. Gaelic (although we have this in Northern Ireland as well, it’s a lot less political here)
7. Cranachan
8. Obese aberdonian seagulls amuse me greatly
9. A brilliant accent (for the most part…)
10. Two days of new year bank holiday? Yes please!
And some things that I don’t understand (but I say all these things lovingly!):
1. Random bank holidays. Fancy a day off in mid-september? Go for it! Just don’t ask for Easter Monday off!
2. Everything non-alcoholic or not hot is “juice”
3. Does anywhere really sell deep-fried mars bars, or is that a myth propagated by the tourist board?
4. Why oh why oh why did “Dear Green Place” get a second series?
5. Edinburgh City Council, who are always thinking of us. Enough to constantly send us demands for council tax we’ve already paid every few weeks.
6. Do Andy Gray and Grant Stott do anything other than appear in panto?
7. What’s actually in the yummy Edinburgh chip sauce?
8. (starting to run out) What happened to Heather’s weather? Or is it that I just don’t watch Reporting Scotland much these days?
Can’t think of anything else, really! But these things are minor grievances, as it’s probably my favourite place to be!
